Richie Hawtinと共作の'Technarchy'を+8からリリース(1990)してから現在に至るまで、彼が与えたテクノ／ハウスシーンへの影響は、かの Maurizio 卿、Richie Hawtin 博士も公言しているようにシーン内でも最大級のものだ。近年のリリースこそ少ないものの、自身のトラックをリリースするために立ち上げた Accelerate Communications(1992)からはデトロイトテクノを漂白しきったような、最小限の音でグルーブを生み出すスタイルを確立。'Losing Control'(1994)はミニマルテクノ／ミニマルハウス史上最も重要なトラックの１つとして知られている。彼の功績はリリースしてきたトラックだけではなく、+8(with
Richie Hawtin)、Frictional (with Anthony Shakir)、Dataphysix (with Dopplereffekt)、Elevate (with Theo Parrish)、Harmonie Park (with Rich Wade) 等の重要レーベルを 設立をしてきたことにもある。また自身の7th CityからはJohn Tejada、Jeff Samuel、Cabanne、Todd Sines等の現在一線で活躍しているアーティストのカッティングエッジな作品をリリースしてきた。Daniel BellのDJについては、いわゆるミニマルハウスやクリックテクノといったカテゴリーに当てはめられることが多い。が、彼のDJの魅力を音の表層だけを表す単語で括るのは大きな間違いだ。彼のDJセットには今最もカッティングエッジな音を操りながらも全体の構築・流れにはハウスミュージックの持つ最高のトリップ感がある。また、EU周辺からぞくぞくと出てきているミニマルハウス／クリックハウスDJがよりテクノサイドな質感や流れでセットをまとめて来るのとは違い、同様のトラックを使用しながらも彼のDJから湧き出るグルーヴは間違いなく本流のハウスミュージックのそれだ。MIXテクニックに関しても、まさに非の打ち所が無いかたちで曲を紡いでいく。１曲１曲がスライドしていくように混ざっていき、常にハウスの旅を途切れさせない独特のMIXには感動すら覚える。彼のDJを聴けば、今世界中で拡大を続けるミニマルハウス／クリックハウスといった音楽を表す単語に何故“ハウス”という言葉がついているかが理解できるであろう。
Born in Sacramento, raised in Toronto and made in Detroit, Daniel Bell`s career started as Cybersonik a collaboration with Richie Hawtin on Plus 8 records. This duo`s potent amalgamation of Chicago’s searing 303s and the brutal stomp of European hardcore, imbuing techno’s harder fringes with a touch of Detroit futurism, bestowed Plus 8 with its signature sound and saw Doc Martin and Richie Hawtin playing around the world.
In 1991, Daniel Bell debuted his own label, Accelerate, where he released a string of influential releases as DBX. Influenced primarily by Chicago House as well as the works of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, his productions were minimalist house grooves accented by blips and bleeps. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, and released his first mix CD, The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell, on Tresor Records which was named the 2nd best album of the `00s on Resident Advisor in February of this year. A confluence of musical cultures from so many cities, Daniel Bell is famous for his unique style drawing the crowd in and building them into a frenzy.
