Drums of Death (死のドラム)とは何とも不吉なアーティスト名だが、強烈な「魔術師ゾンビ」キャラクターと熱狂的なライブ・パフォーマンスと組み合わせるとどうだろう、5月5日は渋谷の夕暮れ時が、少しだけより暗く見える程度かもしれない。この2年間、Greco RomanやCivil Musicといったレーベルから出された彼の作品は、スコット・ランドからロンドンを経て、高い評価を受けている。また、エレクトロ・トラッシュの女王Peachesのアルバムのプロデュースも手掛けた。
しかし、彼のレコードもその斬新なライブ・パフォーマンスと比べたら真っ青だ。今回Drums of Deathは、これまでTokyo Indieが行ってきた中でも最もエレクトロの要素が強いパフォーマンスを見せてくれることになっている。激しいテクノと馴染みのあるハウスを掛け合わせ、夜のパーティーにぴったりのムードに。彼はパントマイムの悪役のような奇怪な顔を作りながら、全身黒づくめの衣装で、鞭を打ったり、観客をなじったりするのだが、彼に言わせればこれは「パフォーマー、観客の両者をそれぞれの落ち着く場所から引きずりだし、できるだけクレイジーなショーにするための仕掛け」とのこと。
より暗黒の思考を以て、より深淵まで物事を考えよ。臆病者には向かない、これが真のクラブ・ミュージックだ。
Drums of Death ? an ominous name in itself, but when you twin it with a “voodoo-zombie” persona and a frenetic live show, the Shibuya nightfall will seem just that little darker on May 5th. Hailing from Scotland via London, the last two years have seen a string of high profile releases for DoD on labels such as Greco Roman and Civil Music as well as producing an album for the queen of electro trash, Peaches.
However, his records pale in comparison to his absorbing live show. DoD promises to provide one of the most electric performances Tokyo Indie has ever seen, fusing feverish techno and old school house to create a lurid backdrop for nocturnal debauchery. On stage, Bailey thrashes and jerks dressed head-to-toe in black while sporting the face of a deranged pantomime villain which he says is “a tool to assist both the performer and the audience to leave their comfort zones and for the shows to be as crazy as possible.”
Think deeper… Think darker… This is real club music not for the faint hearted.
