As they celebrate their twentieth anniversary with some very special gigs, they remain as exciting and relevant now, as when they first broke through to the immortal strains of ‘The Only One I Know’ ? if not, more so, as a new generation of young bands and fans today hail them as lifelong heroes.

Rooted in the Midlands and Northwest of England, the band have always exuded positive energy, whether in the first mania of their success in the early ’90s, or while suffering their many tribulations midway through that decade, or in their sophisticated, ever-questing vitality today.

The unshakable line-up of Martin Blunt (bass), Jon Brookes (drums), Tim Burgess (vocals), Mark Collins (guitar) and Tony Rogers (keyboards) have, along the way, made so much beautiful, brilliant music ? countless classic singles, bursting with melody and class; and an enviable catalogue of albums, each restlessly different from the last, none anything short of compelling, uplifting, or totally rockin’. Unlike all but a very select few bands of their vintage, Charlatans albums are urgent, and full of life, both commercially and creatively.

Their eleventh studio collection, ‘Who We Touch’, must surely rank as their boldest to date, radically broadening, in places, their aesthetic remit. It is, says Burgess, “a soulful voyage”, a journey through moods upful and profound, dark and delirious, ultimately concluding in blissful optimism. Its sound is inspired by many heroes, yet always sounds like no-one other than The Charlatans themselves.

“You don’t want to do something you’ve done before,” Tim reasons. “You have to start with a blank page. You need to be enlightened. The dead give birth to dead things.”

For 2008’s ‘You Cross My Path’, The Charlatans were revved up on the groundbreaking idea of distributing their latest opus for free on the internet. Far from commercial suicide, it reinvigorated the public’s love for them, and they approached their follow-up record with fresh impetus. The whole process of making it began, however, a little earlier than they’d imagined.

“We were due to do an American club tour at the end of last summer,” Mark Collins recalls, “but then Jon [Brookes] had a mishap with his shoulder, so we ended up pulling the tour. Rather than sit around being idle, we decided to get cracking writing some tunes.”

In the past, their core writing team ? Tim, Mark, and Tony Rogers ? have generally convened at one of their homes, and written together. This time, ringing in the new, they each wrote separately, digging deep on their own for an intensive 12-week burst, in advance of studio time booked for December.

For his part, Tim sees his train of thought for the album beginning (as it often does) with his fanatical absorption of other music, at the dawn of 2009’s festival season. At Coachella, he was blown away by Throbbing Gristle (he was a TG virgin!), while at Primavera, he grooved on to My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth.

In June, Tim curated a day at the Isle of Wight Festival. His line-up, in the 10,000-capacity Big Top, featured a clutch of young acts ? The Horrors, Hatcham Social and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart ? with whom Tim has struck up a rare cross-generational understanding. For the youngsters, Tim is an icon, an unswervingly cool British singer dude, who has been out there, living it and loving it, as long as they’ve been listening to music (or longer!). For Tim, their youthful energy has been contagious, reminding him that age is nothing but a frame of mind.

The Charlatans themselves headlined in style that day. Playing in the slot beneath them, Tim had a lifelong inspiration, one of the first bands he ever saw, Killing Joke, in their original late-’70s line-up, with Youth on bass. He watched The Horrors with Youth, and struck up a new friendship. Mark and Tony had actually already met the bassist in ’06, when, in his subsequent capacity as one of the hottest producers around, Youth was putting together a new version of their ’01 classic, ‘You’re So Pretty, We’re So Pretty’. Mark and Tony added a few overdubs back then, and liked his vibe.

While those two wrote at their respective retreats in Manchester (Mark) and Ireland (Tony), Tim beavered away across the Atlantic in his adopted hometown of North Hollywood, Los Angeles. “Rhys [Webb, The Horrors’ bassist] was in town,” he remembers. “I was saying, ‘What should I do, I’ve got this record to write?’ He was like, ‘What would Brian Eno do?’ ‘Yeah, good point! He would write loads of chords out, put them on his wall, and randomly just pick out chords’… And that was how I wrote the first song! It was a great way of starting something out of nothing.

“The whole of the last album was made up of three chords,” Tim continues, “every song was three chords. When we started making it, we knew we were giving it away for free, which felt like a very post-punk thing to do, so we went in with a three-chord attitude. But doing the same again this time would’ve been cheating ourselves, and the people who listen to us, so we tried to get in as many chord changes as possible, which immediately took it to another world.”

Early on, they decided to call in Youth, who, since his original stint in Killing Joke, has worked with artists as varied as Paul McCartney and Primal Scream, The Verve, Dido and The Drum Club, as their producer. Such versatility would prove essential as the ‘Who We Touch’ album unfolded. He also vibed up Burgess on Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Hero With a Thousand Faces’ ? a non-fictional book “about the responsibility of the artist, about having to be brave” ? which would have a massive impact on the singer.

After sending numerous ideas backwards and forwards to each other digitally, the five Charlatans convened to demo their first batch of songs at their own Big Mushroom studio in Cheshire. As ever, everyone contributed ideas: Mark chipped in with ‘Smash The System’, while Tony brought in ‘Your Pure Soul’ ? two complete musical pieces, to which Burgess added the lyrics and vocal melody. ‘Sincerity’, meanwhile, arose from a Krautrock-inspired jam between the band’s four UK-based instrumentalists, instigated by bassman Martin Blunt.

A month later, they laid down tracks with Youth over ten days at Britannia Row in Wandsworth (on the desk that New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ was recorded on), followed by another five days at State Of The Ark in Richmond.

“We told Youth, we wanted the record to have the sound of a European winter,” says Tim, “with that fresh, crisp sound you get from some British records, but also something fearless, that was quite far-reaching, to challenge ourselves ? a real journey.” “Youth just comes in, smokes his weed and starts dancing around,” adds Mark, “If he likes something, he starts trying to fly. If you see him flapping his arms, you know he’s digging it.” “Yes,” Martin summarizes, “he’s a bit of vibemeister”.

In Joseph Campbell’s book, the author talks about the heroes of mythical sagas, who go through adventures and experiences, to emerge at the end with greater strength and wisdom. Such is the overall construction of ‘Who We Touch’. In ‘Your Pure Soul’, the singer comes to realise his own failing in trying to control his lover. The ‘motorik’ groover, ‘Sincerity’, meanwhile, finds him rather scornfully observing an excessively sincere person, but through that discovering something about himself: “With care it comes to me/I have autonomy and new possibilities”.

Though it has its melancholy, autumnal moments, ‘Who We Touch’ ultimately rises into optimism, with ‘Oh!’, a beautiful song of reconciliation, as complex as its shifting time signatures (one section is in 3/4 waltz time), and then ‘You Can Swim’, an exquisite ooze of ambience, reminiscent of ‘Another Green World’-era Eno, with whose creative ideas, of course, the album began.

As that track fades out into the ether, another circle is soon closed within the Charlatan narrative, on the hidden track, ‘I Sing The Body Eclectic’. When Tim was 13, his favourite band was Crass, the anarchist post-punk collective, and he still counts their 1981 album, ‘Penis Envy’, amongst his all-time Top Ten. Recently, he was introduced to Penny Rimbaud, Crass’s drummer, producer and ideological brains, whose portentous voice can now be heard booming the album’s story to an end on the grandest existential scale.

Carl Craig has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking.
Craig released his first track in 1989. One of his earliest mentors and first collaborator was Derrick May, whose imprint Craig also released some of his early music on.
In 1991, wanting pure artistic freedom, Craig set up his own label Planet-E and released ‘4 Jazz Funk Classics’, under the moniker 69, as the label’s first release. From here his wild exploration of sound intensified…
A Gemini true to form, with a mind that never sits still, Craig has released a diverse range of experimental and groundbreaking music under a plethora of aliases including 69, BFC, C2, Innerzone Orchestra (‘Bug in the Bassbin’ was credited as the spark that inspired the evolution of drum‘n’bass), No Boundaries, Psyche, Paperclip People, Tres Demented, Urban Tribe and many more. He has also produced albums for the legendary Detroit Jazz collective Tribe as well as orchestrator / pianist Francesco Tristano and French producer Agoria.
Live he has collaborated with Les si?cles orchestra at Cit? de la Musique in Paris. A meeting of techno and classical music, the concert was described as “historical”, Craig went on to repeat the formula in Milan and Germany. He regularly performs live as experimental outfit Trio with Moritz Von Oswald and Francesco Tristano, sometimes as Narod Niki alongside Villalobos, Luciano, Richie Hawtin, Zip and others, and regularly does part live and part DJ with Luciano. Additionally he’s taken to occasionally bringing keyboardists like Mike Banks (UR), Amp Fiddler and Tristano into the DJ booth with him for special one-off gigs. He also improvised live to an Andy Warhol film at the Unsound Festival in New York. In 2011, Craig went live as 69 for the first time ever, fusing masks, darkness and the music of 69, Craig created 69’s own entity and previewed the show to a few select festivals and clubs around the world.
His remixes discography boasts some of the most desirable names in music ? LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Junior Boys (nominated for a Grammy Award), Gavin Russom & Delia Gonzalez, Theo Parrish, Tori Amos, Can, Goldfrapp, Friendly Fires, Caribou, Tiga, Unkle, Yello and more.
As well as an outlet for his own productions, his Planet-E imprint has given a home to a wide range of Detroit-based artists including Francesco Mora Catlett, Naomi Daniel, Flexitone, Jason Hogans, Kenny Larkin, Monty Luke, Moodyman, Mike Agent X, Oliverwho Factory, Ezana Harris, Recloose, Reference, Kevin Saunderson, Big Tone, Tribe, Urban Tribe, and Chaz Vincent.
Staying strong to his Detroit roots, where he still lives today, Craig helped launched the Detroit Electronic music Festival in 2000 and remains a strong force at the festival today. He has also created and launched his non-profit 501-C3 Carl Craig Foundation: “The concept is to find ways to re-educate kids about what’s interesting musically that you can’t get on the radio… To develop a new music scene that follows the legacy of Detroit music being diverse and interesting, to spot out the most talented young musicians coming out of high school and lend small financial grants to encourage music education at a higher level.”
When Craig explains his philosophy, his wry sense of humor seeps into his explanations of far-reaching concepts that merge worlds together. “I have a very special career. When I feel that I’m tired of going on the road I can go in the studio. When I’m tired of concentrating on the studio I can go on the road. I can work with concert pianists, jazz musicians or rock guys. Very few people have that range of interests. Very few people juggle a career that they choose specifically.” No one else can pull it all together quite like Carl Craig.

Not only was his head-turning 10-hour set a hit at Warung breaking the club’s all time attendance record, the set also formed the basis of a prestigious Essential Mix in May 2011 on BBC Radio 1, with Pete Tong describing Sharam “in devastating form.” Charting at #14 on the iTunes Dance chart the day after release along with an overwhelming outpour of praise from his fans proves his first compilation album in five years was well worth the wait.

Satoshi Tomiie is Japan’s most successful DJ. Since the late 1980s he has been at the forefront of the global house music movement thanks to his seminal dancefloor anthems, pop remixes, headliner DJ sets and constant reinvention.
A lifelong student of jazz and classical piano, Satoshi had an influential impact from his very first record. His debut single ‘Tears’, which he co-produced in 1989 with Chicago’s ‘Godfather of house’ Frankie Knuckles, was an instant club hit and is today considered one of house music’s most important moments.

In the early 1990s, he toured and played keyboard for Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame). His reputation for crafting meticulous club rhythms led to him remixing some of pop’s biggest names including U2, Mariah Carey, Photek, Simply Red, and David Bowie.
At the turn of the millennium in a reinvention move typical of his DJ career, Satoshi introduced a groundbreaking new club sound via 2000’s ‘Full Lick’ album. The long-player featured dark twisted electronic rhythms, haunting vocals, and hypnotic grooves that came to set the benchmark for a new developing house scene. The album’s hit single ‘Love In Traffic’ became a worldwide underground hit.
Another source of house music renovation, Satoshi and Hector Romero’s record label SAW.Recordings has continued to refine the Chicago and New York City house blueprint over the last 10 years. A fine supporter of new producers, SAW most recently has championed a new generation of European-based house talent including Audiofly, Doomwork, Mabaan Soul, Tuccillo, and Guti.

In 2012, after a two-year absence from music production (Satoshi used the time to build a dream music studio in his NYC apartment), Tomiie is set to return with a whole new DJ sound, new singles, and remixes. His first offering is an 11 minute twisted piano house remix of Guti’s ‘Keep It’. The release is being supported by respected DJs and producers across the board including Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Reboot, Adam Port, Lee Burridge, 2000 And One, SIS, and Davide Squillace.

Because so much has happened since the release of the band’s much lauded debut X Marks Destination and everyone - band included - needs to make at least some sense of it. Therapy, Bruce calls it later on.

“It’s been genuinely intense,” confesses Nathan Sudders (bass) as a parting shot at the end of our session. “But I think the story needs to be told. There’s been euphoria, massive fall outs, sleepless nights, people leaving. Times of desperation and times of elation. We’ve never had as extreme emotions as we had making this album. In the end though it’s brought us closer together and helped us produce our best music to date.”

“I’m not sure any of us could go through it again though...”

The Whip landed fully formed in 2007 - a swaggering dancefloor inspired four piece with an ear for a pop hook culled from soaking up the vibe of Manchester’s mongrel club scene. They’d all been in bands before with varying degrees of success but this was the one. Their sound was a peak time rush of euphoria crafted into songs that stayed with you way beyond ‘the moment’. They clubbed, they partied and won club and live audiences over with the help of surefire detonations such as their crossover club smash ‘Trash’ - a riot-inducing number that assured them a peak time live slot at many of the world’s most exciting clubs and venues. It was the perfect calling card for a band crafting pop out of the intangible psychic energy created by the dancefloor.

This carefully executed mayhem didn’t escape the attention of smart promoters and labels all over the world for long. Soon The Whip were signed, released and roaring round the USA moving from party to party, gig to gig leaving dancefloors and after parties in pieces. It was fun and full-on. Not for the fainthearted. There are tales.

An increasingly relentless touring schedule saw the band take Europe countless times, Japan three times, Australia - then there was the other three forays across the Atlantic...

“It was insane,” explains Bruce Carter (singer). “Texas, New Orleans, Miami, right up the East Coast through Canada and down the other side. To me the new album reflects that mayhem, how our lives were at that time. Tracks like ‘Riot’ are about us constantly finding that place to get excited. Looking for the sparkle and finding it night after night. We got pretty crazy for a while. It’s best not to keep that up for too long.”

“We had to stop,” says Fee Daniel (drums). “Stop playing live. Stop remixing records. Stop giving it out all the time. You can’t just live it all the time. You have to write and reflect on it. We thought it would be a good idea to write tunes over in Ibiza when we were over there playing. Doesn’t work like that though does it? Not when you can be raving with your mates.”

So The Whip returned to England to digest the madness and turn it into a follow-up album that would mean something to them and their experiences. They collectively loved their debut but like any band worth its salt wanted the next one to be better. Highs create lows and lows create highs. The challenge was to distil the feeling, translate it into something universal that an audience would respond to.

“If the first album is about getting the band going and getting to the place you want to be,” explains Bruce, “this one is about being at the funfair and realising it’s where you wanted to be and also not where you wanted to be all at the same time. Being in the midst of madness is costly.”

“Take ‘Keep Or Delete’ on the new album,“ continues Bruce. “On one level it’s about the disposability of popular culture now. Perhaps about putting out a record in 2011 to a culture that treats music as disposable. But it’s also how we felt about all the brilliant people we met when we were away on tour who we loved being with but always said goodbye to only hours after we met. It’s disposable but at the same time meaningful and wonderful.”

“I have met so many people since playing in the band,” adds Fee. “Musicians can get caught up hanging out with other musicians and that can cause you to lose the magic. You’ve got to get out there and meet people, go raving. I’m doing it for the good of the band really...”

Sure.

Holed up in a hellish sounding studio in London hired from producer Brendan Lynch with near legendary producer Jagz Kooner at the helm, The Whip started turning all their distilled experiences into music. Whether it was the partying, the madness, the fact that it was little bigger than a luxury sized coffin, whatever... they couldn’t get it right.

“We could only sit on the sofa in a row,” remembers both Bruce and Nathan separately. “You had to lean forward and turn to one side to speak to anyone. We became a three piece just before we went into the studio out of complicated necessity and fortunately Jagz was there to help us shape what we had become. He really pushed us into new places stripping things down and building them back up often quite brutally. Laying down the 303 over ‘Riot’, taking stuff out but always totally honest with us.”

Jagz Kooner is no stranger to diving headlong into complex sonic situations having been a founder member of acid house pioneers Sabres of Paradise with Andrew Weatherall. His work with Primal Scream, Kasabian, Oasis, Reverend & the Makers and Royal Trux gave each band some of their finest work to date. Taking the role as a fourth pair of ears he inspired a brutality in the band’s musical decisions where each member strived to be the best they could with no compromise.

“We kind of got locked in to the studio in a way that wasn’t healthy,” says Nathan looking back. “Other musicans will probably recognise this state. I remember one night Jagz had been working for 14 hours straight through on the drums without a break, food or even a drink. He just collapsed at the mixing desk. I thought we’d fucking killed him.”

With the band now gelling and genuinely replicating the energy and emotions that a life on the road had thrown at them, Wired Together finally started to take shape. Friends in both The Chemical Brothers and Primal Scream would drop by the tiny studio to see what was happening and they felt it too. The Whip were starting to build a follow-up album that took the energy of the first album but crafted it better, worked it better, and did it better. Lyrically Bruce was expressing himself with more clarity than ever before and the band’s music - though more club oriented at this point - reveals itself through more hooks and a purer energy.

“It was such a good feeling to get to that place,” says Bruce. “Sleepless nights, falling out, losing a band member, crying from the confusion of it all, it was too extreme. But we did it and I’m proud we did. The record is a testament to this.”

“We’ve been through a lot,” agrees Nathan. “But this is the record that brought us back together and captured the spirit of the band. But better than that even... We now have a record that we can take out live in the autumn ? one that we know full well is going to get people excited about The Whip all over again.”

最近の楽曲制作としては、CMではPanasonic「スマート家電」などがある。また、サッポロ「スリムス（観月ありさ、工藤静香出演）」など、過去にも様々なものを手がけている。その他、世界三大広告賞でそれぞれグランプリを受賞したダンスミュージック時計「UNIQLOCK」、2009年6月より公開している、2ヶ月に１度新曲を披露するブログパーツ「UNIQLO CALENDAR」の楽曲制作、NIKEプロジェクト「NIKE+」への参加、村上隆がルイ・ヴィトンの為に手掛けた短編アニメーション「SUPERFLAT MONOGRAM」（2003年）「SUPERFLAT FIRST LOVE」（2009年）の楽曲制作、さらに人気海外ドラマ「SEX AND THE CITY」にも楽曲提供も行っている。

DJとしては、ジャンルという固定された概念に縛られる事無く、常に独自の視点で独自の音楽を産み出していくスタイルが支持され、国内は全都道府県制覇、海外でも約50都市にてプレイ、さらに国内外のハイブランドによるパーティーのDJとしても活躍している。2000年12月より西麻布YELLOWで隔月開催していたレギュラーパーティ「Grand-Tourisme」が、YELLOWの閉店に伴い2008年6月に終了となるまで、計46回、のべ47000人以上という、クラブイベントとしては驚異的な動員を記録した。

現在では、奇数月第四金曜日に麻布十番WAREHOUSE702にて「EVERLUST」、大阪にて「Hyper Society」、京都にて「京都大宴会」、新潟にて「lock.」をレギュラーパーティとして開催中のほか、新木場ageHaにて、自身が最も注目する海外DJを毎回指名、共演するパーティ「Baroque」を不定期開催。Freeform FiveやAlan Braxe、THE BLACK GHOSTSとの共演を果たす。

DJ AKi’s contributed his exclusive MIX CD for collaboration with the ”GARCIA MARQUEZ” today’s leading female fashion brand in Japan. 10,000 MIX CD were given away amongst in Japan. This Brazilian-flavored MIX CD reflects diverse influenced and inspirations that he had from various places and events and heading to next exploration to the new frontier. This MIX CD resulted in great success not only in Japan but worldwide. And took him to next level. In December 2006, “06SPACE MIXED by DJ Aki” will be released in iTunes store directed by NIKE.

He started to play in Europe since 2007. 2012年は音楽ファンに、とりわけUKロック・ファンにとっては特別な一年となるだろう。マンチェスターのレジェンド達が再び動きだし、3回目のサマー・オブ・ラブが巡ってくるかもしれない。そしてもうひとつ！そのレジェンド達がよりどころにしたマンチェスターの伝説のクラブ、ハシエンダの名を冠したフェスが開催される。
パンク以降、後の音楽シーンに最も影響を与えたムーブメントの中心だったクラブ、ライブ・ベニューであるハシエンダ。そのスピリット伝えるため、現場の当事者でもありジョイ・ディヴィジョン、ニュー・オーダーのメンバーでもあったピーター・フックのプロデュースにより、日本でもフェスが開催されることになった。今年はハシエンダ・フェスをヨーロッパを中心にいくつか行うとピーターは言う。その彼が日本のハシエンダ・フェスについてこう言っている。
『ハシエンダ初期の経営を支えていたもっとも重要な2枚のアルバムの再現ライブ、マッドチェスター時代を象徴するバンドであるシャーラタンズ、そしてハシエンダが世界的なシーンの震源地となったアシッド・ハウス時代からのUKハウスのオリジナイターであるエクスプレス・ツー、そして今のダンス・シーンのトップ・クリエイター達が出演するんだ！最高のパーティーにならないわけないだろう？』

80年代末、アシッド・ハウスの嵐はマンチェスターのハシエンダからイギリスへ上陸し、その後現在のダンス・シーンまで繋がる源流となった。と同時にザ・スミスやニュー・オーダーを生みだした街であるマンチェスターの数多くのバンドにロックとダンス・ミュージックの融合というアイデアを与えたのもまたハシエンダの功績だ。ザ・ストーン・ローゼズ、ハッピー・マンデイズ、ザ・シャーラタンズ、インスパイラル・カーペッツ、ジェイムスなど多くのバンドがマンチェスターから新しいサウンドを発信した、セカンド・サマー・オブ・ラブといわれた時代の希望に満ちたサウンドとメッセージはその後のマンチェスター最大のスターであるオアシスまで受け継がれている。

ハシエンダが火を点けたクラブ・カルチャーはシカゴ・ハウスやデトロイト・テクノをヨーロッパ的に進化させ、その後のスーパー・クラブそして多くのパーティーやレーベル、アーティストにはかりしれない影響を与えた。余談にはなるがケミカル・ブラザーズの二人が出会ったのはハシエンダに通うためにマンチェスター大学に入学したことがきっかけだ。

2000年以降、ロックもダンス・ミュージックも無軌道な創造性を失ってしまっているのではないだろうか？もっと音楽がワクワクしていた時代があったことや、パーティーで真剣に踊りながらバカ笑いしていた自分を思い出してみるのも楽しいのではないだろうか？

He was much inspired and returned the inspiration back to Japan. Sugiurumn’s album “Our History is Made in the Night” was released in 2004. This album drew large attention in the Japanese dance scene and single “Star Baby” became a smash hit. This track was remixed by Axwell and DJs all over the world all played this tune. “Star Baby” got licensed by Ministry Of Sound and became a hit tune not only in Tokyo, but all around the world. Sugiurumn’s powerful, passionate and latest DJ style rocked the weekends of Japan. His base club was Daikanyama Air, and the words of mouth quickly spread over the sea. In 2006, Sugiurumn was selected as the DJ of Pacha Ibiza’s mix CD and rocked the 4,000 people in the Pacha main floor. Sugiurumn achieved great credit from Pacha, and done Pacha Ibiza’s mix CD for 3 consecutive years.

In 2007, Sugiurumn signed with Avex and released “What Time is Summer of Love?” License offers from labels all over the world came flooding in for its recorded single “Travelling” and it was released worldwide from Pacha Recordings in 2008. Meanwhile the title track “What Time is Summer of Love?” was remixed by Richard Gray and got recorded in the first track of Pacha compilation. “What Time is Summer of Love?” became one of Pacha Ibiza’s biggest hit.

In July 2008, Sugiurumn challenged for a 24 hour play at Kyoto World. He made through this incredible journey from start to end. When the long play ended, the place was filled with great thrill and enthusiasm.

2009… This year is the 10th anniversary for artist Sugiurumn. His much anticipated first two best albums will be released 2010 february and March. In these albums, Sugiurumn’s past career as well as future visions will be fully presented.

Ryo began his music career in London as a rock drummer at the young age of fifteen. Since then he participated in more than 100 gigs between Tokyo and London, leading him to become a DJ in the year 2000.

Since beginning his DJ career in Tokyo, he soon became the resident DJ of "EDEN" at Club AIR in Tokyo. He not only became a popular DJ in Tokyo, but also helped create many parties, including a collaboration party with world class organizers such as Global Underground and Serious. These club events continue growing today, with over 500 people at each event, leading them to be known as one of the most respected underground parties in Tokyo.

On 2005, Ryo participated in a gig at Room in Melborune, Australia and made his first trip abroad as an artist. In 2006, his first original track `Smashing Pumpkin` was listed on a Compilation CD of EDEN, leading him to begin producing new music to compete in the Tokyo music scene. Later, in October of 2008, Ryo took off on a tour of Indonesia, including a gig for the Halloween party at 66 in Bali, which gathered over 1000 people and further strengthened his career as an artist in Asia.

Since 2008, Ryo began organizing a new party called “Weekend Warriorz”, bringing in artists such as Doc Martin (Sublevel/US) and Giles Smith (Secretsundaze/UK), Damian Schwartz (Oslo/spain), 2000 and One (100%pure/Amsterdam) which showed his passion and vision towards a new dimention of house music at an international level.

In February of 2009 he had his first gig in Bangkok, Thailand, which led him to start a radio program entitled "Tokyo Sessions" on the most famous dance music radio station in Bangkok - UB Radio. Also in 2009, Ryo won the Red Bull club event competition “RED BULL NIGHT MASTER” through EDEN and became known for the No.1 club party in Japan.

Ryo claims that his music is techno oriented house, but basically believes that categorizing music is meaningless, and always focuses on playing what he needs to express his feeling and enjoyment of music. This year Ryo won the PATAGONICA DJ Contest, organized by Parties 4 Peace, and has traveled to Chile, South America in February of 2010. He made a tour with 7gigs showing off his musical talent as the champion from Tokyo, Japan.

A seasoned DJ with over 17years experience behind the decks of London’s House scene and around the world. His experience and talent have seen him spin and hold residencies at such legendary nights as Soul Heaven, Garage City and Housexy and take to the decks of the capitals top venues, including; Ministry of Sound, Pacha and Bar Rumba. These nights regularly put his sets along side respected DJs such as; Kenny Carpenter (Studio 54), Norman Jay (MBE), DJ Disciple (Catch 22) etc.

Having been based in Tokyo since 2006, Aron gained himself a respectable following amongst the city’s ‘heads’ from both the local and foreign community. Off the back of his own event creations, high profile DJ bookings and some very respectable residencies, his has become a household name in this thriving metropolis. 2007 saw the creation of Aron’s own event production company ‘dB UKi’ and his first Tokyo event ‘SOUL’, which drew on the true spirit of the London Deep/Soulful House scene. The DJ bookings soon flooded in thereafter, seeing him headline and hold residencies at such respected events as ‘SOLID Tokyo’ and super club ‘WOMB’.

2008 was welcomed with co-organisational/promotional responsibilities and a residency for the world renowned ‘Defected in the House’ series at super club ‘Air’, which put his sets alongside many stars, including; Dimitri from Paris, DJ Gregory, Sandy Rivera, Charles Webster, Kevin Saunderson, Simon Dunmore, The Shapeshifters, ATFC, Copyright, Yass, Hardsoul etc. and even gained him a place alongside a plethora of these artists for the ‘Defected in the House 10th Anniversary’ at Tokyo mega-club ‘AGEHA’. In parallel with this project, Aron re-launched the legendary ‘Junior Boys Own’ record label in Tokyo with an event series featuring its owner and founder Terry Farley.

In a very segregated industry with foreign events on the one side and Japanese events on the other, Aron has been one of the very few foreign DJs able to charm his way into the Japanese community and remain, allowing him to enjoy both sides of the industry and perform to some very different audiences. Entering 2009, Aron’s diary filled up even further with regular bookings for Japanese run events; ‘King Street Sounds’, ‘Cyber Japan’, ‘Hed Kandi’ & ‘Pacha’ having him play alongside artists such as; Quentin Harris, MR.V, Danny Krivit, Sarah Main & Chuckie and begin a series of appearances at super clubs ‘Warehouse702’ & ‘eleven’ (formerly ‘Yellow’). Aron also started a series of monthly events at Tokyo’s ‘UNIT’, stepping away from his purist House routes and exploring all walks of dance music, with artists such as; Oliver Ho a.k.a. ‘RAUDIVE’ & Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2).

In 2010 Aron took it upon himself to break new, fresh talent in Tokyo, beginning with Vega Records/Yoruba Records rising star; Boddhi Satva. Towards the end of 2010, Aron was invited by Yellow’s ex-manger and manager of new hot-spot ‘Microcosmos’ to take on resident duties alongside Studio Apartment’s Masanori Morita for new flag-ship event ‘NXT1’, which saw the two friends play back2back from open to finish allowing the pair to really explore the depths of their record boxes and find new and exciting ways to play regularly as a duo in front of an intimate crowd. Also in 2010, Aron became an integral part of ‘AUDIO’, the first foreign organised 5000person+ 2day electronic music festival to be held in central Tokyo and then again in 2012 as the festival joined with UK mega event ‘The Hacienda’ adding more of a live element to the festival and putting Aron alongside legends of both the DJ and live music world.

In 2011, Aron cemented himself as a mainstay of the Japanese clubbing scene and was instrumental in nurturing it through difficult times. The opening of new super club ‘Sound Museum Vision’, saw Aron play a major role in events including the mighty Basement Jaxx and the legendary Louie Vega. While 2012 saw Aron continue to evolve musically as a regular feature at ‘Sound Museum Vision’, supporting artists such as Los Hermanos, Ken Ishii, Boys Noize, UMEK, Matt Tolfrey and Matthias Tanzmann.

As we enter 2013 Aron feels he has made as much of an impact as he can on the scene in Tokyo, so is stepping away from event producing and being more selective about the DJ gigs he accepts, in an attempt to free up his time to further concentrate on his music production. Ironically, this year he has found little time to commit to the studio as he has been lucky enough to have been invited to be a part of some very special events indeed; Playing the headlining role at AGEHA’s main arena, as well as headlining for the more sombre affair of the closing of Warehouse702. Supporting legends such as Darren Emerson, Dennis Ferrer, Bob Sinclar and also David Morales for King Street Sound’s 20th Anniversary and once again being an integral part of ‘AUDIO | THE HACIENDA FESTIVAL 2013’ alongside legends and modern day stars of the scene such as; Afrojack, John Digweed, Digitalism, Pendulum, 808 State, Happy Mondays, James Zabeila and many more.

With a resume as diverse as outlined above, it’s no wonder that when asked; “What kind of music do you play?” Aron finds it very difficult to answer and despite the occasional disapproving look from so called ‘purists’ Aron wouldn’t have it any other way, after all he sees variety in music as the-spice-of-DJing-life. It’s an attitude that has kept him busy for the past 17years in London, Tokyo, around Asia, Europe, Australia and even South Africa. Aron is a DJ who is never satisfied standing still musically but one who still remembers his roots, that a smile costs nothing and that the most important people at the party are in front of, not behind, the decks.

Of course, 17years ago Aron began his career on vinyl and like many was reluctant to give up the organic feel and sound quality as CDs made their way in but eventually couldn’t deny their convenience in comparison, especially when travelling and is just recently starting to discover the joys of the USB. Aron personally doesn’t favour the look of the PC DJ but doesn’t knock any other that has found their niche with this technology, especially those who have ‘done their time’; “Sure, using the synch button might be considered ‘cheating’ but DJs who have done their time have nothing to prove and ‘tight mixing’ isn’t the be-all and end-all of what makes a DJ great. Any monkey can learn how to mix but it takes real ‘experience’ to understand how to put together and build a set and ultimately work a crowd. Too many new DJs these days are all about the prime-time slot and have no idea how to warm-up a party!” Aron is so disillusioned with this fact that he regularly likes to take the early-time-slot at his events to show the newbies how it’s done, that parties still work under 120BPM and that playing in front of 30 people can be just as rewarding, if not more so, as playing in front of 3000!
