The modular synthesiser is a music tool receiving ever-increasing attention in the electronic music world. What is the charm of modular synths at a time when computers and software already give limitless power and scope to create sounds and music? Certainly an important reason is the physical hands-on experience that modulars provide. Moreover, as more and more makers and products enter the market, the endless possibilities to customise a modular into a very unique and personal instrument is simply too irrestistible.
The Tokyo Festival of Modular has been Japan's premier modular synthesiser event since it's inauguration in 2013. Ever-expanding, this year's festival sees an expansion beyond SuperDeluxe, the festival's home, to bring the largest ever gathering in Japan of international module makers, with their interactive booths alongside workshops, lectures and live performances, to the Red Bull Studios Tokyo Hall in Shibuya on June 11th & 12th. But we are proud to continue using SuperDeluxe as a key festival venue with this very special Premium Live event, headlined by techno/trance pioneers Eat Static from the UK and the extraordinarily multi-talented electronic artist Richard Devine from the US. The lineup is completed with the exceptional yet little-known George Chua from Singapore, and the beautiful ambience of Noroeste (aka module maker Touellskouarn) from France.
EAT STATIC
www.eatstatic.co.uk
Eat Static are one of the longest-running live electronic dance music acts, regularly headlining dance music festivals around the globe with their unique brand of sci-fi/world-infused music. Hard to categorise, Eat Static excel at crossing boundaries with an extensive back-catalogue of albums, one-off tracks, and numerous remixes spanning psychedelic trance, techno, drum'n'bass, breakbeat, downtempo, and more. They formed way back in 1989 when Merv Pepler, Joie Hinton and Steve Everitt first got together to record in a dusty attic somewhere in deepest Somerset, UK. They were one of the UK’s first all-live dance acts cutting their teeth at numerous free parties and raves in the early 1990s. They developed their live set into a spectacular show featuring dazzling lightshows, a giant illuminated brain and a whole studio running on stage. A loyal following quickly formed after people finally realised that dance music could be performed live and could have the same energy as traditional rock bands had had for decades.
Founder member Merv Pepler continues to record and tour constantly, and last year's double-album release Dead Planet showcases the depth and breadth of his artistry and production wizardry in exhilarating fashion. Always looking for fresh innovative sounds and always constantly devoted to pushing dance music forwards, Merv has become an avid user of modular synths, harking back to Eat Static's all-analogue beginnings but with a distinctly modern twist. As well as Eat Static's 90-minute performance at SuperDeluxe, don't miss their very special exclusive 60-minute experimental modular performance at Red Bull Studios Tokyo Hall 5F on Sunday June 12th. Don't miss this unique opportunity to soak in the power and beauty of this wonderful craftsman from another planet!

GEORGE CHUA
George Chua (b.1970) is a sound artist and experimental musician based in Singapore active since the late nineties. He currently uses the modular synth as a live performance tool. He hope to create electronic music free of the anxiety of influence in which genre boundaries can be unclear, unnecessary and unpredictable. Apart from his own solo work, his collaborative interests includes live improvisation and unconventional strategies for soundtracks and sound design for film and theatre. He has composed music for films by Singapore artist/filmmaker Ho Tzu Nyen. He also participated in the first Singapore Biennale in 2006.
“George Chua creates sonic experiences that explore the vibrational quality of sound. His performances, although drawing from the nowness of improvisational methods, appear like compositions that unfurl majestically in real time. With a concentration that verges on meditation, he coaxes bold sonic ideas from a palette teeming with unearthly frequencies, drawing listeners into a universe of shimmering metallic overtones, dreamy subaquatic rhythms and spiraling spacescapes. An exceptionally intuitive and soulful sound artist, George is a rare and exotic breed in the world of modular synthesis.” Cal Lyall.
NOROESTE
https://soundcloud.com/geostructure/sets/noroeste
Noroeste is a French ambient, future jazz, experimental artist. Their CD "Respiration Etang", released on Russian Label Aquarellist, is reviewed here:
Gaël Loison (Touellskouarn), founder member of Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones (with C.Mével and Y. Martin) has given us “Noroeste - Respiration Etang”, an incredibly rough and scandalously powerful record, like a pile of skinned and macerated electronics as if Brian Eno, of sinister memory, had poked his fingers in the grid and tinkered around making ambient music with his unwashed hands. This is a celebration of adventure, of accident and of the incredible through the voice of Zalie Bellaccico. Loison has already made a name for himself with the “TF” collective projet (3 albums) , "Maman Küsters" EBM electronic gonzo duet with Cyril Pansal (one album, one EP and one remix) as well as the “Moregeometrico” geocaching sound experiences, generously offering web listeners his geographical obsessions and taking on stoic challenges like sonically describing such improbable places as Fieux hill, the high plateaus of Tibet and Lake Inari. He is also responsible for the “Douche Electrique” events in Brest, Brittany: unique mishmashes of music, dance and contemporary art. Loison has also collaborated on unmentionable albums by Tank, Mythe Moderne and Arnaud Le Gouefflec.
