It has been an amazing journey from our beginning at La Fabrique in the heart of Shibuya to Warehouse 702, Ageha, Womb, Trump Room and now for our 10 year Anniversary at Contact on June 17th, 2017.  Yet it all didn't just start in Tokyo, but in Osaka!  Yes, London Calling originally began in Kansai at the legendary hot spot, Club Triangle, nearly 2 years before our opening night in Tokyo.

渋谷の中心であるLa Fabriqueに始まり、Warehouse 702, Ageha, Womb, Trump Roomでの素晴らしい功績、そして私たちは2017年6月17日にContactで10周年を迎えます。始まりは東京ではなかった。そう、東京でオープニングナイトを繰り広げる２年前、私たちは関西の伝説的なクラブ、大阪のTriangleで始まりました。

Former co-founder, Julian Ehrhardt and I envisioned of a night where DJs came together with an 'anything goes' attitude to keep the dance floor hot and sweaty all night - The hotter the beats the hotter the dance floor!  This all began in 2005 when I just moved to Tokyo from Hiroshima and made friends with Jules via MySpace. Yes, MySpace!  I noticed that he had a night in Kobe where he lived and I asked if I could DJ his party in the future. A bold request since I wasn't known by him or by anyone for that matter outside of Hiroshima.  

初代の共同創設者Julian Ehrhardtと私は、DJたちと共に'何でもできる'雰囲気の一晩中ホットで汗ばんだダンスフロアを夢見ていました。熱いビートを、熱いダンスフロアを！すべては2005年、私がちょうど広島から東京に移り住んだ日、JulianとMySpasceを通じて知り合いました。そう、MySpace! 彼が神戸のイベントでDJを探していたとき、私が彼にDJをさせてもらえないかと頼んだのです。
 
After a few emails back and forth and a demo here and there I got a lucky beak because a DJ he booked for a party he was having cancelled. It was my first gig to be paid a travel expense, DJ fee and all the other niceties that come with being booked as a guest DJ. As it turned out, the night was a success and Jules continued to book me for more gigs regularly in Kobe and Osaka.

それは、その当時広島以外で私のことを知る人はいなかったので(もちろん彼も)とても勇気のいることでした。いくつか彼とメールを交わした後、元々プレイする予定のDJがキャンセルになったので、幸運なことに私は初めてDJ feeや移動費、その他色々な待遇をしてもらえるようなゲストDJとしての出演が決まったのです。さらにその夜は大盛況を収め、Julienはその後も大阪や神戸での色々なイベントに呼んでくれました。

Then, one day he rang me up and said he wanted to have an official club event with a brand and logo to represent UK style clubbing in Japan.  He gave me three names he had thought of and London Calling was one of them. The other two names have been lost to memory because London Calling was so strong in my mind that that was all I saw at that time and still continue to do so to this day.

そしてある日、彼から電話がありオフィシャルなブランロロゴを用いたUKスタイルのクラブイベントを東京で作りたいという話があったのです。ロンドンコーリングという名前は彼が出した３つのアイデアの中の一つでした。そのほかの２つは思い出すこともできません。なぜならロンドンコーリングという名前がとても強く私の頭の中に残り、未だに焼き付いているからです。
 
Initially Jules wasn't so keen on the name of London Calling because it had such a strong reference to The Clash which people could mistake the event for a punk or rock show. I assured him that the name was perfect for just that reason.  The Clash is my favorite band and the album London Calling is my favorite too! So, my thinking was that 'London Calling' represented a DIY attitude for the Clash since punk was dead at that time in London and they had to create a new sound and direction for themselves and so the story goes... the rest is history. With that in mind, I felt that should be the ethos of our event and told Jules that is how we should pursue creating a unique clubbing experience in Japan.

There it was.  We created London Calling.

当初、Julianはロンドンコーリングという名前がそんなに気に入っていませんでした。なぜならその名前はThe Clashのイメージが強いため、パンクロックのイベントと思われるのではないかと心配したからです。でも私は、だからこそ良いんだと彼を説得しました。The Clashは私の大好きなバンドで、ロンドンコーリングのアルバムも大好きだから！The Clashのアルバム'ロンドンコーリング'は、パンクロックが死んだ後、彼らがパンクとは全く違う自分たちのサウンドを作ったことで世界的に有名になるきっかけになったものです。私は'ロンドンコーリング'のそういった背景を私たちのイベントに重ねてみてはと思ったのです。ユニークなクラブイベントを日本で、と。

そうやって、ロンドンコーリングというイベントが出来上がりました。

Our first event in Osaka was a success and after a year under our belts we decided to set our sights on Tokyo.  However, it took almost another year to get it off the ground, but with the help of Jeff Richards a former co-founder of Tokyo-London Calling we managed to have our first event in June of 2007 at La Fabrique with former Tokyo giant, Mike Mckenna as our headliner.

大阪での私たちの最初のイベントは成功を収め、1年後は東京での開催する決意をしました。実際は東京での開催まで更なる１年を費やしましたが、東京ロンドンコーリングの共同創設者Jeff Richardsの助けにより、Mike Mckennaをヘッドライナーに迎え東京での最初のイベントを2007年６月、La Fabriqueで開催しました。

Fast forward to now and you can say London Calling has weathered a few ups and downs, but it never lost focus on bringing quality music by Tokyo and International DJs to the dance floors of Tokyo.  From the Electro Clash beats of Alexander Robotnick and Zombie Nation to the Techno groove of Monika Kruse to the Nu Disco sounds of In Flagranti, Bottin and Disco Blood Bath as well as showcasing the skills of master turntablist, Egyptian Lover, we continued to push the musical boundaries for a unique clubbing experience.

そして今、アップダウンはあったもののロンドンコーリングは東京のインターナショナルなDJたちによる素晴らしい音楽をダンスフロアに届けています。Alexander RobotnickによるエレクトロClash beats、Zombie Nation、Monika Kruseのテクノグルーヴ、In FlagrantiのNu Disco sounds、Bottin や Disco Blood Bath、master turntablistのEgyptian Lover。音楽のボーダーを取り払いユニークなクラブイベントを作りあげてきました。
 
Finally, for our 10 Year Anniversary we are pleased to showcase two headliners for this special occasion. We have a London Calling alum, master producer and DJ, Ewan Pearson as well as the funky sounds of PBR Streetgang to keep the dance floor hot all night long!

ついに私たちの10周年では２人のヘッドライナーを迎えます。過去にロンドンコーリングでプレイしたこともあり、マスタープロデューサー、そしてDJのEwan Pearson。さらにはファンキーサウンドのPBR Streetgangがダンスフロアを一晩中ホットにすることでしょう！
