Porter Robinson（ポーター・ロビンソン）が新曲「Get Your Wish」への思い入れや背景を公開した。

新曲「Get Your Wish」は2014年の『World』以来、6年ぶりの彼のソロ曲。ミュージックビデオでは、Porter 自らがマイクを取り、変わりゆく背景をバックに、歌う姿が映し出されている。ヴォーカルエフェクターを使用しているため女性のように聴こえる曲中ボーカルも Porter Robinson 本人の歌声であると、Porter は SNS で解説している。

「人工的に声を高くするエフェクトを利用して歌っているんだ。最初は、辛いことを直接話しやすくするために使っていたけど、徐々にその声の響きに愛着をもつようになったんだ。
これは僕さ！」

長い間リリースがなかった理由は「深く、感情的な理由であること」であったと明かした Porter。2014年以降、Madeon（マデオン）と「Shelter」をリリースし、Virtual Self（ヴァーチャル・セルフ）というプロジェクトも立ち上げ、一見順調にアーティストとしてのスキルを積み上げているように見える Porter であったが、一方の Porter Robinson としての活動は、実は2015年から2017年の間、暗礁に乗り上げていたようだ。
 

”My entire life revolved around making music, but for the first time in my life, I was struggling to make anything at all. I was desperate to make something I was proud of, but the more I struggled, the worse the problem became. I was very seriously depressed and genuinely thought my life as I knew it was over.”

「それまで僕の人生全てが、音楽制作を中心に回っていたのに、人生で初めて何かを作ることに苦戦していた。自分が誇りに思えるものを作るのに必死だったけど、苦しめば苦しむほど、どんどん悪化して行った。精神的に鬱状態に陥いって、本当に人生が終わったと思っていた」

「頑張り続けることに意味がないない」とまで考え込んでしまうようになった Porter だが、しかし最終的に、Porter はアーティストとして自分自身を超えていったのだ。

"I realized I shouldn’t write music with the expectation that productivity or achievement will fix my problems, but instead with the hope that my honest expression will move people the way music moves me. So when I was really struggling to write and it seemed impossible, instead of thinking, ‘You’re struggling because you’re a fraud, you’re clearly not cut out for this,’ I began to tell myself, ‘Yeah, this is what you sacrifice."

「自分が抱えている問題を解決できるという期待を持って音楽を作るのではなく、音楽が僕の心を動かすのと同じように、僕の誠実な表現が誰かの心を動かせるという希望を持って曲を作るべきだと気づいたんだ。だから、曲作りにすごく苦戦していて不可能だとさえ思えたとき「お前は紛い物だ。音楽制作には明らかに向いていないんだ」と考えるより「これは（リスナーに）捧げるべきものなんだ」と自分に言い聞かせるようになった」
