"Jazz United”
As the Coronavirus pandemic has continued to worsen around the world, the impact on the jazz community has been immense. Musicians and live venues are facing an unprecedented situation, and have been forced to consider alternative ways of presenting the music. In Tokyo, venues are limited to less than half the usual capacity, while in New York City all the clubs remain closed.
During this long period of isolation and self-restaint, we here at JJazz.Net have thought long and hard about what we can do to help jazz musicians, club staff, engineers, producers, photographers..all the members of the world jazz community that help us enjoy the world's greatest music. Our work on JJazz.Net would not be possible without all these hard-working people, so we want to now give back and support them as best we can.
2020 was the 20th anniversary of JJazz.Net, and we have been assessing what our goals should be in this form of media. With support from the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan and many JJazz.Net previous collaborators, we have set up the upcoming event Jazz United - Live Jazz From Tokyo & New York. The concept of 'Jazz United' is to bring people together through the wonderful medium of jazz.
The Tokyo and New York jazz scenes are very much interconnected, with a new generation of musicians criss-crossing and settling in each city. For this performance, on the New York side we present a trio of three leading young musicians, Harish Raghavan, Joel Ross, Aaron Parks.
In Japan, we present former New York resident but now back in Japan during the Covid crisis, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda. Popular jazz musician and also long time New York resident Miho Hazama will MC the event in both English and Japanese.
Booking and arranging the New York segment of Jazz United is agent Office Zoo, which has for over forty years been booking musicians to play in Japan. In Tokyo, the site of many JJazz.Net events in the past, the event will be held at JZ Brat at 50% normal capacity due to Covid restrictions. The famous Klavier Hall in Manhattan will host the New York event.
As the world continues to fight back against this devastating epidemic, 'Sharing' and 'Collaborating' will continue to be essential ideas for us all in the music world. It is our goal at JJazz.Net to move forward with this spirit of collaboration, taking our first step with this very special Jazz United performance.
Organizer/Promoter Kenaro Tokuhiro and jazz pianist Yayoi Ikawa are assisting in the planning of the New York event. The previously set up the event 'Love letter from New York', also held at Klavier Hall.
The logo is designed by Yosuke Wada, who is well known as the leader of the jazz band Libstems. The online video direction will be done by BEAKER's Atsushi Miyaburo, who recently oversaw the well-regarded live video by the Suga Dairo Trio.
