The Kannon Sound Laboratory is a Japanese speaker brand, specialized in producing CLUB SOUND, building all the speakers by hand.
A successfully produced CLUB SOUND involves three aspects: being suitable for long time listening, enabling dance floor conversation, and offering an overwhelming sound experience.
We have been experimenting and developing to realize these elements simultaneously, and the efforts crystalized into the Kannon Sound series.
The history of Kannon Sound goes back to 1983, when a Sapporo DJ, TOK.M traveled to New York City and had a mind-blowing experience at the legendary club, Paradise Garage.
It's sound was massive, and at the same time so clear you could have a conversation on the dance floor.
TOK M. was mesmerized by the sound, and thanks to Larry Levan, the resident DJ of Paradise Garage, he befriended Richard Long, who designed the sound system for the club.
Long generously gave TOK M. his last UREI 1620 MUSIC MIXER from his home studio.
Coming home to Japan in 1986, TOK.M started to recreate the unforgettable sound himself, with the help of fellow sound engineer Yamada Kazuhiro.
After twenty years of trial and error, the project is finally taking shape in the Kannon Sound.
In short, Kannon Sound is a CLUB/DISCO/BAR dedicated speaker system, taking cue from the sound system of Paradise Garage, produced by Larry Levan and Richard Long.
The Kannon Sound series does not require equalizing, which is usually needed in producing CLUB SOUND using common audio systems or concert loudspeaker systems.
By just adjusting the amplifiers, you will have all three elements realized: easy on the ears for extended listening periods; allowing conversation on the dance floor; and a powerful, physical sound experience.
The sound system delivers deeply satisfying experience both personal and mutual.
Also, the Kannon Sound series generates sound without altering the sound characteristics according to the floor size
(whether a small dance floor of about 30 people, or an outdoors festival counting 10,000 audiences).
Clear and rich midrange, absorbing and powerful deep bass that gives a unifying feel to the crowd, and extremely refined high notes as if showering from the sky… all these ranges will be played out evenly, presenting palpable sound image to all audiences.
In addition, there will be no oppressiveness of bass nor shrillness of midrange, form all listening points.
In design, the Kannon Sound series employs closed-back cabinet, front loaded horn style, and all models share the same sound characteristics.
For the mid-high range, squawker in stead of compression driver is chosen so as not to tire the ear over time.
Also, in order to realize an overwhelming sound experience, the speakers are designed to allow for bass directionality.
Time delays are aligned throughout all frequency ranges, thus realizing a palpable sound image, as well as a sound balance unaffected by the audience size.
All speakers are made as space-saving as possible, which can be carried by one person and installed into any kind of space.
All speakers are surprisingly slick to be handmade, but at the same time perfected with the precision only handcrafting could deliver.
Top-end models are made of white birch from Hokkaido.
As to speaker units, british imported FANE speaker units are employed across all models.
Kannon Sound series offer a wide range of speakers to meet various situations, all models made without compromise.
Handcrafted one by one, these speakers have "soulfulness" no mass production could achieve.
What we seek is to go "beyond the good sound".
You would probably experience a good sound in some clubs, but with the Kannon Sound series we tried to go further.
Faithfully reproducing the music is minimum requirement for a speaker, but it could be more than that.
Deep bass as if bathing in some comfortable liquid. High notes shooting through the body like laser.
Vivid sound image like you have it before your eyes. Sound that turns spaces into places.
When indoors, as if walls and roofs disappear. When outdoors, as if it's ringing right near.
"Visualizing the sound image, making it palpable, massive sound to be more massive, near sound to be nearer."
Producing a seeing sound, feeling sound, other dimensions of space…that is what we try to do at Kannon Sound Laboratory.
What is expected of CLUB SOUND? To produce an extraordinary atmosphere, to give a physical experience to the whole crowd,
and making it a shared experience. The Kannon Sound Laboratory is a sound system like no other to realize these goals.
