Rukaiya Russell (pronounced ru-kee-ya) is a Producer, Musician and DJ from South London. Her debut single ‘Bring Back The Routemaster’, a punchy track about London’s iconic bus, received attention from both radio DJs and the Press.
Her influences are 70s Soul, Funk and House & Garage, she also mentions listening to a variety of music growing up which led her to playing the piano by ear. Prior to producing, Rukaiya studied languages and lived abroad where she discovered Latin music and learnt the classical guitar. She also attributes her inspiration to her experiences abroad.
In 2010 she collaborated with MC and DJ, Serocee and they released ‘Sound di Vuvuzela’, a World Cup song in response to the hype around the vuvuzela horns. In 2012, Rukaiya released ‘Cuba Libre’, a single and EP which contains remixes and other tracks with the use of synths, live instruments and elements of Funk and Latin.
