Having no musical background or formal teaching, Sri-Lankan born Londoner Suren Seneviratne aka My Panda Shall Fly had gone through many an incarnation until he found where he was comfortable - from shoe-gaze, post-rock in his early teens to sound manipulation and experimentation in his later years. Coming from a formal Fine Art background, My Panda Shall Fly went on to release his debut EP on Dam Mantle's Growing Records & Wichita Recordings - which saw incredible support from the likes of Pitchfork, Dazed Digital, Clash Magazine, XLR8R, The Fader, The Independent, Dummy Mag & more. Following that came an onslaught of incredible remixes for the likes of The Weeknd, Fink, Psychologist, Terror Danjah & Little Boots.
Since 2012, in-between appearances on Rinse FM & Boiler Room, and various festivals like BBC Hackney Weekender, Outlook Croatia & Glade, My Panda Shall Fly has released a plethora of truly eclectic material, avoiding genre confinements along the way and proving difficult to define in every sense. Just some of the output from 2012 & 2013 includes a collaborative vinyl release with Benjamin Jackson on Five Easy Pieces, a dark dancefloor-orientated digital EP with Will Ward on XVI Records, a 7" single with Adventure Elephant on Tape Club Records, accompanied by an incredible short film/music video shot on 16mm film by director Christopher Toumazou which went on to garner well-deserved praise and accolades from the likes of BBC Music Video Festival among others. 2013 was rounded off with another cassette collaboration with Microburst on the Cleaning Tapes label and finally an unexpected LP of hardware-only techno-inspired dance cuts on mysterious Italian label Gang of Ducks. My Panda Shall Fly has also been busy in the studio with producer Asier Leatxe Ibanez d'Opakoa (Electric Lady Studios, NYC) recording a six-track world music concept album, incorporating live instrumentation as well as electronics, which is being planned for release in 2014.
With already a handful of widely diverse releases penned in for the early part of 2014, My Panda Shall Fly seems to be slowly yet carefully leaving a mark across the whole of the contemporary abstract electronic music scene in his own unique & eccentric way.
