At the start of last year i returned to Sydney for shows & my first piece of down time after a 150 show album tour. It was the height of Australia’s night culture crisis (brought on by lockout laws), with the upcoming state election, rally’s & the ‘Keep Sydney Open’ movement in full effect.
It got me thinking about all the circumstances that had to have aligned for so many of us to go from making music in our bedrooms & garages to touring around the world.
i wanted to unpack what created such a flourishing scene, our sources of inspiration & the creative heroes (whom you may have never heard) that contributed to the rise of dance music.
I sat down with a bunch of long time Sydney based friends & colleges, picked their brains & prodded their memories. I wanted to share where they had been, where life had taken them & what they were doing now. In a city that has seen such extensive fluctuation in the creative sector, I wanted to know how people adapted & continue to find joy when things aren’t as easy.
First up Patrick Santamaria! The man who (with his team at ‘Babekuhl’) created pretty much all the astonishing visuals you see on the big LED walls at my shows… but Pat wears many hats, running a techno label (Motoric), warehouse raves, the first to tour the likes of Gesaffelstein in Australia, the Motoric radio show on fbi, DJing & even a member of an iconic Aussie band (Lost Valentinos) from a collective that inspired the creation of the scene i became a part of.
