Swedish DJ and producer Alesso, has only just turned 21, but has risen high in the ranks of the EDM world. He was named as the EDM Artist To Watch for 2012 by MTV and chosen by Madonna to support her MDNA tour. He has also ranked No. 20 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs list and has made a huge name for himself in such a short period of time. We were able to catch up with Alesso to chat about his 21st birthday, memorable moments of 2012, and what new projects he has lined up.
Hi Alesso, thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Our readers love to go out, party, and most importantly love electronic music. That being said, our first question to you is, are you a big partier? Tell us about your craziest night out in 2012.
Haha I guess I am. My main focus is to make sure that everyone who comes to my shows is there to party and have fun...but I'm always ready to party with them!
2012 was an incredible year and this summer has been the best one of my life so far. If I had to pick one night...it would have to be my 21st birthday tour in the US. I brought my closest friends with me and I did a couple of shows throughout the US. It was just incredible… we had a crazy week!
Favorite club?
Wow that's so hard to choose. I've played at so many great clubs and they're all different in their own way...It all depends on the vibe and the people who are there. Although I would like to mention Pacha NYC which is really built for dance music.
2012 was a crazy year for you. What were your best moments and what has been your most memorable show?
As I said 2012 has been just fantastic! I've played at so many incredible shows and visited one amazing place after another. If I had to choose, I would say Coachella, Summerburst in Sweden, Milton Keynes Bowl with Swedish House Mafia, Tomorrowland, EDC NY, the Ushuaia shows in Ibiza and of course my 21st birthday tour in the US with my very own show in New York!
We love your video for "Years"! So...how real is the storyline? Did you really get kicked out of a club and sell your motorbike for cash??
Thank you! The storyline is based on my life so everything is inspired from real life situations, but not everything is completely accurate. The part where I sell my motorbike and buy a computer for the cash is 100% real!
What was it like having Sebastian Ingrosso as your mentor? How did your relationship with him start?
Having Seb as a mentor has of course been amazing and he has been a huge support. Of course I have always done my own thing but he has pushed me and helped me understand what's important and what to focus on, both production wise and at the shows.
Everything started about 3 years ago. I knew that Seb's father always went to the same coffee shop in Stockholm. So I made a CD and gave it to him, which he then passed on to Seb. After he heard it, he called me and said that he really liked my stuff and asked if I wanted to work with him. Of course I said yes...! So that is how it all started.
What are your plans for 2013? Can you give us any information on upcoming music or collaborations? Any plans for touring in Japan?
I've got a lot of new music coming out, and I'm trying to focus more on my original stuff at the moment. I have a new remix for One Republic coming out very soon which I absolutely love!
Show wise, I have a hectic year coming up- a lot of travelling and shows at lots of fantastic places. I've just announced that I'll be back at Tomorrowland 2013 and I'll be performing at Miami Ultra music festival for the first time! I also hope to get to Japan very soon!! There is a lot of stuff coming up and I'm very excited!
Thanks for your time Alesso. We look forward to meeting you in Japan!
