ONEMAN LIVE "Project" After Party-Special Guest Performance / eyden
“ I quickly learned that playing the music I loved from the heart was the way to connect with my dancefloor and this has also helped me stand out”
“From a very young age I always put mixes or tapes together using an excellent Sony studio cassette recorder that my dad bought, it had channels, faders and various filters. I would play with all the switches and the levels and obviously it would sound hideous, but it was trial and error and taught me how to make things sound good”.
In the late 80’s from humble beginnings Danny filled in for Kev Roberts, a well know Northern Soul dj at his best friend’s club in central Manchester.
“The dj failed to turn up and we were promptly handed a suitcase of 7” (45rpm) records, whilst the crowd spun and danced. It was a baptism of fire but we turned it around and my mind was now set on becoming a real dj”.
Danny then went on to organize and play at his first parties for friends from school in 1990. It was then a voyage through warehouses and clubs of the UK to find Danny’s second home on the white shores of Ibiza. Since his first visit in the mid nineties, soon after Danny became a resident DJ at the now legendary Cafe Mambo for over four years. This whilst being the only DJ to be resident at Cafe del Mar simultaneously, in one year!
“I lived above Café del Mar at the time and used to say hi to the owner who told me they were trying out new dj’s. I was dj audition number 27 and Ramon gave me the job! Maybe I had a head start on the others as I had already been playing down at Mambo for a while. But after the departure of Steve Lawler, Mambo was my base over 4 years and I couldn’t have chosen a more exciting period to be there”.
In this time Danny was lucky enough to play sets before and after the likes of Sasha, Leftfield, Deep Dish, Carl Cox, Jose Padilla, David Morales, Eric Morillo and Frankie Knuckles.
“It was like the song goes, ‘anybody who is anybody will soon walk through that door. And that’s how it was, after many parties there were many lifelong friendships made and some invaluable contacts whilst behind the decks in Mambo in those years. It was expected that leading artists or promoter would pay a visit and often they too became part of the family”.
In his time in Ibiza Danny played diverse sets regularly at Pacha and Amnesia Terrace for Cream among others. In recent years in Ibiza there have also been guest slots at Space. Elsewhere highlights have included the Homelands, Bestival on the Isle of Wight and Back to Basics. All this as well as an enviable list of foreign visits including Slovakia, Hungry, Chamonix, Amsterdam, Vienna, Switzerland and Ibiza .??
Danny now has an even heavier DJing and production workload, after reaching his 21st year in music last year. There are a number of tracks due for release in 2013 as well as compilation features. Danny’s latest production, ‘It Goes Boom’ has been released on the Stripped Recordings Imprint soon. This track was co-produced by Pete Gooding who is part of the ‘SecretLife’ blog and record label, which Danny is also a contributor to.
Danny is looking to the future (and often the past) – musically listening to all kinds of sounds during the daytime. The new music and different sounds coming out still excite Danny. Gig wise, never pigeonholing himself into one genre, his sets bring together different styles into one enticing sound. All this whilst keeping one eye on the dancefloor, sensing the overall vibe, should he need to inject another element. Sets and selections in music vary from club sets playing house, electronica to melancholy moody sunsets playing soundtracks such as ‘Once upon a time in America ’ and ‘Bladerunner’.
