XXXSSS Tokyo is an international, Tokyo-based duo composed of Japanborn, NYC-raised DJ Sarasa (aka Silverboombox) and Ukraineborn, UK-raised XLII. In many ways XXXSSS Tokyo is not unlike that moment in Dragonball Z when the heroes have to result to the ancient fusion technique in order to defeat the bad guy, and so two seemingly opposite and different characters merge into one in order to get things done. Yes, that's an incredibly nerdy reference but somehow feels appropriate and gets to the point: XXXSSS Tokyo is an unlikely combination of two artists with seemingly opposite approaches to hip hop and club music who together become more than the sum of their parts.
Together Sarasa and XLII combine their own predilections for turntables and digital controllers to perform live, though roles aren't as straight forward as you might think with XLII behind the pads while Sarasa cuts up a storm. Using turntables, laptops and two N.I Maschine controllers, XXXSSS Tokyo create music that is thick and layered, pulling from their respective experiences and backgrounds to create a high energy mix of dance floor friendly hip hop beats and bass, electronic dance music and a little je ne sais quoi born of this unique fusion.
While the focus of the project is on maximising their unique contrast in a live environment, the pair are also working in the studio to create their own tracks, some of which are starting to appear on compilations.
Separately they've performed around the world, appeared alongside old and new school legends, released on labels including Ninja Tune and Civil Music and worked with The Universal Zulu Nation, Wax Poetics and more. As XXXSSS Tokyo they're creating their own brand of bass-heavy dance music: energetic like Tokyo, colourful and exotic like India, heavy like London while also dirty and danceable like Baltimore.
