The year 1994 marks the beginning of DJ Monumental’s career. It began with a set of turntables, a tape deck, an old school Gemini mixer, and an eager seven year old.
Even from such a young age, Mike, who would later be dubbed ‘DJ Monumental’ was already being exposed to the DJ culture. His earliest memories as a kid growing up in Brooklyn were of watching his father set up shop every weekend at local parties and wedding receptions. A young Mike would tag along with his father helping to carry records and set up equipment nearly the same size as him. The set-up would be done, party people would trickle then eventually flood the dance floor and without fail by the end of every night the party-goers would be in total appreciation of the music history booming out Papa Monumental’s speakers.
Witnessing the control his father had over the crowd, and the way he set the mood for everyone to enjoy themselves, Mike knew that this was exactly what he was meant to do. And that’s exactly what he did.
Monumental began like most local DJs ? spinning at house parties playing everything from Hip Hop to R&B, Top 40 to Pop, Alternative to House, Reggae to Soca, Rock and the Classics. His versatile and creative DJ style allowed him to adapt to any crowd and ensure that all the party people would have a good time. Fine-tuning his craft he also began making mix tapes for friends at school.
However it was not until Monumental reached college that he began to focus on reaching a broader audience. In addition to producing his own mix tapes, the exposure he gained from reacher a wider demographic also secured Monumental’s place as one of the youngest featured DJs in the New York, and on the national club circuit. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg as Monumental has also been moving the crowds internationally, spinning hits in Japan, London, Canada, and Anguilla.
And while Monumental was spinning worldwide he was also networking and connecting locally within his own community. When the opportunity arose to join forces with G.W.E (Gain Wealth Enterprise), another prominent youth-driven entrepreneurship, he grabbed it. The collaboration led to Monumental DJing at even more college events in and out of state.
It was Monumental’s overall determination to spread his musical influence outside of New York City coupled with his undying passion for disc jockeying that ultimately spawned the concept for The National College Tour. The tour’s five year reign has provided Monumental with the opportunity to make each tour more exceptional than the last. Most recently, Monumental has secured a spot on BET’s 106 and Park as the newest in-house DJ, further exemplifying that hard work and passion-based determination does pay off.
