It’s the sound of a knocking thud on your door the same night you watched a horror movie. It’s the feeling of waking up from a dream in which you time traveled backwards and forwards simultaneously. It’s that oddly comfortable uneasiness in realizing the future is now but you may not be 100% ready for it. Italy-born LA-based Andrea Fratangelo, known as Bot, makes the sounds of tomorrow while keeping in mind the styles and methods of those before him. His style, which some may say shaped those of his label with Astronomar and Neoteric, Main Course, have a distinctly club influence, but not in the way you may think when hearing the word “club.” He is very much in a lane all his own, though the sounds of his influences and past works are very much readily apparent throughout.
Bot marks the development of his current direction with December 2014 release, Genghis Clan & Bot’s “Roff” [link]. He found solace in focusing on the percussion, often saturating the basslines and layering white noise textures atop calculated rhythms. A feeling of deep jungle exploration, darkness from the shade of a thousand sky-scraping trees, and the roars of animals yet identified. Since then, his work embodies many elements of nature while maintaining a wholly future-forward foundation.
From “Roff”, he collaborated on Sage Armstrong’s EP for Dirtybird for “She Smokin” [link]. This release is a bit darker with a heavier focus on muted basslines and lo-fi storytelling vocals. He would work with Sage Armstrong again for Main Course’s Plates Vol. 2 [link]. His catalogue went on to include Destructo, a remix for Brenmar and UNIIQU3 for Fool’s Gold, a full immersion into the Genghis Clan project with Riva Starr, and a release on NightBass with Tony Quattro.
In June of 2016, Bot will offer his latest solo EP on NightBass with Kaleena Zanders on the lead track. He also has a collaborative EP with Low Steppa for This Ain’t Bristol for June. Bot has been working in the studio for other collaborations with the likes of Will Clarke, Billy Kenny, Sacha Robotti, Craig Williams, Mike B, Matthew Anthony, and more. While his big basslines and gut-wrenching drops have marked his most recent work, Bot’s future productions will hold more emphasis on continuous grooves that ebb and flow and will “hopefully make you lose it on the dancefloor."
