DJ / Sound Designer
Based in Shibuya, Tokyo, K THE RATA has been active since the early 1990s, exploring deep and minimal techno through experimental and highly structured soundscapes developed over decades of practice.
Influenced by his grandfather, a dedicated record collector, he grew up surrounded by vinyl, learning to experience music through the physical act of placing a needle on a record. Alongside early exposure to instrumental performance, visual arts, painting, and computer technology, this environment fostered a balance between sensitivity and structure that continues to define his artistic approach.
Grounded in this background, his DJ sets and productions are both stoic and technical, yet guided by strong intuition and emotional depth. Through refined groove work and precise frequency design, he weaves diverse sounds from around the world into a coherent flow, transforming the dance floor into an abstract and immersive artistic space.
Throughout his career, K THE RATA has remained committed to an independent, underground, and leftfield ethos. In recent years, he has founded and curated the music label "Sanzen Onkyo (三千音響)" and the Asian underground collective "evangelists", expanding his activities from clubs and outdoor venues across Japan to major cities throughout Asia, including Bangkok, Seoul, Busan, and Hanoi.
By crossing regional and genre boundaries, he continues to organically connect underground scenes across Asia, fostering and deepening a transnational community rooted in sound, space, and shared experience.
