Uruguayan DJs and producers, with their dark and vivid tracks, have been significantly influencing the techno and house scene from mid-2010 to the present. Among them, the most respected veteran, DJ Koolt, who has been supporting the scene based at Montevideo's club Phonoteque, will make his first visit to Japan and perform at WOMB.
DJ Koolt has had a career since the 90s, but it was arguably his B2B with Nicolas Lutz, streamed by Boiler Room in 2015, that put him on the global radar. This mix generously played masterpieces of 90s UK tech house, breaks, Detroit techno, and Chicago house, which had not yet been fully reevaluated at the time, shocking many listeners. Nicolas Lutz, admired alongside Binh and dj masda, is known for his outstanding selection and skill, and his own label, My Own Jupiter, played a significant role in bringing the Uruguayan scene to light. And DJ Koolt is the master acknowledged by Nicolas Lutz.
Koolt's performance controls the heat on the floor with a mix of tech house that runs and dives into darkness, eerie electro that shines on the floor, and irresistible tribal grooves. Recently, he has been on DJ tours in Europe and around the world, and in May of '23, he provided a podcast for Dekmantel, a large-scale festival and highly trusted label in the Netherlands. This two-hour mix should give you a taste of Koolt's exceptional expressiveness.
Now, powerhouse Uruguayan DJs/producers like Z @ p, Omar, Nico Etorena, and Tunik are making remarkable strides in label management and releases, but the source of it all is undoubtedly DJ Koolt. If you want to experience the ongoing techno and house scene, he's an act you should definitely experience.
