Your beautiful melody line, from Latin style to UK garage, is one of the features of Clean Bandit. What are the roots of your musicality?

We all played music since we were young children. I played cello since 7. I’ve always loved dance music and pop music and R&B and Jack, and Luke played in a funk bands and more indie rock band as well, so we have a lot of different styles that we all like.

Since Clean Bandit do not have main vocalist as a regular member of group, what made you to welcome Julia Michaels to “I Miss You”? Please tell us about the sequence of events.

it’s been a really amazing process with Julia Michaels because usually we find singers after we made a song. We finish a song and we think which voice would sound good with this song and then we send them the song. If they like it and it works like that. With Julia Michaels, we met her in the summer, actually Jack met her first in Los Angeles and they wrote the song together really quickly in about 1 hour, and then we took it home and worked on the production. We went back and forth a few times, but we knew we wanted to write something with her because for me her song "Issues" was one of my favorite songs of the year. I listen to it every day. And also she wrote "Sorry" for Justin Bieber, The lyrics. That’s one of my favorite songs of all time, probably.

It is said that “I Miss You” is based on Julia’s experience of heartbreak, but how did you come up with the idea of instrumental?

Well, we wanted keep it really simple. It is our most simple song in terms of productions  and the number of layers because usually we get carried away making more and more layers of sound. But Julia herself very strict about how she wanted it to be simple so when we played her the first version of the production, we had a few different ideas but the first one we played was this one that we finished with which was an in the chorus everything cutting out and just having the voice with the vocoder and the drums. She immediately loved that one and she wouldn’t even hear any other versions, so it was a good conviction.

You have collaborated with many solo singers. But if you would welcome a singer from other groups(artist), who would you like to bring as a guest vocal?

Hmm...  I like a singer from Maroon 5. I can’t think of any groups. Maybe Chris Martin as well. I like his voice.

What is your plan for the future? Or please tell us your next destination.

And here in Japan we playing in Osaka, as well, and we are then going to focus on finishing our second album. So we will be home for that before we go to America for big tour there.
