Q: Firstly, could you briefly introduce yourself to Japanese readers?

A : I’m 32 years old and from the Netherlands, I live in Rotterdam where our office is also located. Apart from making and listening to music, I mainly enjoy cycling, running, reading and playing football.

Q: When and why did you start your labels?  How many staffs are working for Soave?

A : Soave started four years ago and was effectively the evolution of Selected Sounds, a music blog I started after my studies. It started out as a hobby; mainly writing about bootlegs (unofficial remixes) that I found on SoundCloud. It turned into a label when the artists that I connected with started sharing their original music with me to work together.  In 2018 we started Soave Radio for our instrumental and more lounge style releases. Dusk and Soave Lofi were started in 2020 when artists started sending us more songs in these styles.

We are usually with five people in our Rotterdam office, with about ten more freelancers in the rest of the world (mainly Europe) who work for us most of their time. Most of these people are A&R’s and product managers in one, plus designers, engineers and administration. The majority are artists themselves and release music with us as well.

Q: What are the musical differences among Soave Records, Soave Radio, Soave Dusk and Soave Lofi?

A : Lofi, as the word indicates, releases only so called ‘lo-fi’ songs, usually without but also with vocals. Dusk is releasing house music for club use, mainly tech house. Soave Radio brings instrumental lounge music and our main label releases pop, dance, chill house and anything in between.

Q: Which songs are the biggest hits in Soave?

A : Our ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ remake by Madism, MKJ and Felix Samuel is soon hitting 50 million plays and by far our biggest hit.

Several songs have received over 20 million plays by now: farfetch’d - The Look of Love, Anthony Keyrouz - Wake Me Up In Paris, ConKi - I’m on Fire and Henri Purnell & Revelries- Feel It Still. Then there are lots of songs reaching over 10 million plays. We’ve also had #1 radio and Shazam hits in countries like Turkey and Russia.

Q: What do you think the ideal situation to listen to Soave’s music? (ex: at a club with dancing or at home and relaxed…etc.)

A : We like to provide music for any occasion, but for the majority, the best situations are when relaxing in the sun. On the other hand, our energetic tracks are perfect for working out! Lofi releases should help you focus while working or studying, and Dusk releases are of course the best ones for a club night or festival vibe. I myself also listen to our music a lot while traveling in public transport, and while cooking!

Q : Could you tell us about Netherland’s current music scene and trend from around 2020 up until now?

A : Apart from a few global hits, the most popular music here is actually Dutch rap, even before Dutch pop. Although I’m not a huge fan of most Dutch rap myself, what I like about it is that it includes influences from the Carribeans and sometimes from electronic music as well. The Netherlands has always been famous for its electronic music, but it’s not the main genre here, although you will surely find some dance records in the Top 40. Actually, one of the current biggest hits is Acraze - Do It To It. I personally love this record so I’m proud of my compatriots! I think it signifies the increasing popularity of tech house, but this is hampered by the recurring lockdowns: we won’t be able to go out anywhere for another month as the COVID-situation is heavy here.

Q : How many demos approximately do you get pitched from all around the world in a week or in a month?
We get around 150 demos pitched via our website every week, with another 50 to 100 per week from artists we are already working with added to that. Especially since COVID came in the world, it seems artists are creating much more music and sharing it with us.

Q : Have you ever worked with any Japanese artists?  If so, who?

A : Strangely enough we haven’t got any Japanese artists on our roster. We haven’t received many demo’s from Japan either, so there is definitely room for them! The closest we get is a couple of Korean artists, who are doing very well with us by the way.

Q : What’s your impression of Japan?  Do you have any plan coming to Japan?

A : Everyone who has been to Japan tells me I should go there as soon as possible! So that is definitely a plan of mine. Unfortunately - as for most people - COVID has adapted most of my travel plans these years and I usually stay in Europe.

Q : For last question, could you tell us about Soave’s future plan and message for Japanese fans?

A : We’re very proud to have released a thousand songs in 2021 and for the next year we want to bring as many, but mainly try to make them even better! We also hope for our records to be played on radio and by DJs worldwide more often. We’re very happy to have a partner in Japan now to help our artists get heard by the Japanese music fans as well. There is a lot to discover for you guys! And hopefully this also means we get to release with Japanese artists in the new year as well.
